Police fatally shoot man accused of stabbing his disabled mom on Mother's Day

SOUTHAMPTON, Long Island (WABC) -- Southampton police have identified the man they say was shot and killed after his mother suffered more than 40 stab and slash wounds in a Mother's Day attack on Long Island.

The 62-year-old woman was stabbed and attacked by her son in their home just before 3 p.m. on Topping Drive in Northampton.

On Monday, Southampton police released more details about what happened in Sunday's attack.

They say a woman called them reporting her 28-year-old son was intoxicated and acting violently inside their home.

When officers responded, a second 911 call was made from the same caller who said that her son was threatening her with a knife.

Three police officers arrived and say they found Steven Eastwood armed with a knife and standing over his mother, who was on the floor.

When the officers told Eastwood to drop the knife, they say he advanced toward them, while still holding the knife. Police say in an effort to draw him away from the victim, officers backed away but they say he refocused his attention on the victim and was actively stabbing and slashing her.

That is when police say they shot Eastwood to stop the attack. Eastwood was pronounced dead by EMS personnel.

The mother, who is confined to a wheelchair, was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Her condition is unknown.

Neighbors say she was quiet and suffered years of domestic abuse. Several say she had triplet boys and at least two of them suffered from a mental illness.

"She's lovely. A beautiful woman. You know, I believe that her son just had some mental issues and going through some things. Beautiful, lovely lady. Keeps to herself," one neighbor said.

Three Southampton Town Police officers were treated and released from the hospital.

Detectives from the New York State Attorney General's Office also responded.

The investigation is ongoing.
