QR code scam, part 2 of 'brushing,' 7 On Your Side warns

NEW YORK (WABC) -- On the tenth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, another scam!

7 On Your Side has been sharing the 12 Scams of Christmas, and now we unwrap the crooked QR code, it's part two of the "brushing" scam.

QR codes are everywhere. We use them to order food, pay for things, renew subscriptions, log in when we're locked out, rent a bike, or leave a review.

They're quick and convenient, but that convenience comes with a catch.

Scammers are now using fake QR codes to trick people into giving up personal information or downloading malware.

They're part of "brushing" when they are included on packages that arrive that you didn't even order.

Michael Bordash from Syniverse, a company that connects telecom networks, warns that these codes can look perfectly normal but hide dangerous links. Once you scan and click, your device could be compromised.

Here's how to stay safe:

  • Double-check that the label hasn't been tampered with.

  • Avoid QR codes promising free stuff, they're often clickbait.

  • Look closely for spelling errors or suspicious domains.

  • Never re-enter passwords or credit card details unless you've verified the URL.

A quick scan should never cost you your security. Stay scam-smart this holiday season!
