BRONX (WABC) -- A pedestrian was struck and killed by a suspected speeding hit-and-run driver in the Bronx early Saturday morning.
It happened just after midnight at the intersection of Boston Road and East 222nd Street.
The unidentified driver of a 2025 BMW M8 was going eastbound on East 222nd Street when they struck a 27-year-old man who was attempting to cross the street in the middle of the block.
The driver kept going, spun out and hit a telephone pole.
The pedestrian was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was later identified as Shariq Bryant.
A front-seat passenger of the BMW, a 28-year-old man, suffered minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital.
The driver did not remain at the scene and ran away.
On Monday, a shattered windshield, tire tracks and spilled fuel still sat at the intersection. And across the street, a large vigil has been set up in honor of Bryant.
His girlfriend was there with tears in her eyes, rearranging flowers, cleaning candles and setting up teddy bears left by friends and loved ones.
Local business owners say that specific intersection is no stranger to speeding and no stranger to violent crashes.
On Monday, police could be seen pulling over countless drivers for speeding.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
