Sources: Berrios on Giants practice squad, should play opener
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants re-signed wide receiver and returner Braxton Berrios to the practice squad with the intention of him being active Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys, sources told ESPN.
Berrios was one of several practice squad signings on the field working with the team on Monday afternoon. So, too, was fellow wide receiver Jalin Hyatt.
Berrios and Hyatt were released during final cuts over the weekend while veteran Odell Beckham Jr. earned a spot on the roster. Hyatt, a third-round pick in 2023 who has struggled to gain traction in the NFL, was injured most of the summer. He cleared waivers but was also back on the practice field Monday wearing No. 13 while Beckham temporarily remained No. 3.
Berrios is a vested veteran. He did not need to go through waivers. He was released knowing the Giants wanted to keep him around as their primary punt returner. The expectation is that Berrios gets elevated for the home opener and eventually lands on the Giants' roster.
Other players signed to the practice squad included wide receiver Dalen Cambre and quarterback Jake Haener.
Berrios, 30, was signed to a one-year deal as a free agent this offseason. He has played in just 10 games the past two years because of injury. He's in his seventh professional season with the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins and Houston Texans.
Hyatt was drafted by the Giants in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft out of the University of Tennessee. He was the Biletnikoff winner during his junior year for the Volunteers and was a unanimous All-American and earned first-team All-SEC honors.
But Hyatt has struggled to translate that success to the NFL level. He has 36 catches for 470 yards and is still looking for his first career touchdown after three years.
