Suffolk County police stepping up patrols at malls and shopping centers for the holidays

DIX HILLS, Suffolk County (WABC) -- Suffolk County police have issued a warning that they are stepping up enforcement on what has come to be called "Blackout Wednesday."

The increased patrols are part of a larger effort to keep people safe from drunk drivers during the holiday season.

The holiday rush is upon us, especially out on the roads. Traditionally, authorities say this Wednesday evening is often a rush to the bars before Thanksgiving Day.

Last year, drinking and driving brought a number of crashes.

"There will be tragedies in Suffolk County more than likely. There certainly will be multiple tragedies across the state and across the country because again, this is the biggest bar night of the year," Raymond Tierney, Suffolk County District Attorney, said.

Expect checkpoints and enforcement, police say, in both marked cars and unmarked cars.

"So please make good decision. Don't get behind the wheel if you've been drinking or using drugs. Again, there is no excuse for it. It's selfish, it's stupid," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina said.

Sadly, they say it's only one of their safety concerns this holiday season. Santa may be watching at the malls but it's just hard to keep track of every naughty scammer who step up their game this time of year, targeting the elderly and shoppers who may seem more distracted.

"I think scammers are like anybody else. They need money for the holidays, too. So we do see increased scams at this time of year," Catalina said.

They offered advice if you are scammed.

"Don't be ashamed. Talk to people, contact people because time is of the essence when you are scammed. And the sooner we learn about it in law enforcement, the quicker we can get that money back," Tierney said.

Police say their biggest concern is and always will be potential loss of life.
