SPOTSWOOD, New Jersey (WABC) -- A suspect has been charged with animal cruelty after a flock of geese were struck and killed by a car in Middlesex County, New Jersey earlier this summer.
The deadly collision happened around 6:45 p.m. on July 14 near the lake along Devoe Avenue in Spotswood.
Police officers responded to the scene after reports that a vehicle had struck multiple geese crossing the roadway. Responding officers found seven dead geese in the roadway and that the car involved had left the scene prior to authorities arriving.
At the time, officials said it was unclear whether the fatal crash was accidental or intentional, as police reviewed surveillance footage from nearby businesses and residences and interviewed witnesses.
Following a months-long investigation, the Spotswood Police Department announced on Friday, September 12, that authorities had identified and charged a suspect with seven counts of animal cruelty. The suspect is also facing violations under the New Jersey Fish and Wildlife Regulations, as well as motor vehicles summonses in connection with the incident, according to officials.
"We would like to recognize the invaluable assistance of our law enforcement partners at the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife and the Monroe Township Police Department, whose support and collaboration were essential throughout the investigation," said Spotswood Police Chief Philip Corbisiero in a statement.
"This case reflects our department's ongoing commitment to upholding public safety and protecting all members of our community -- human and wildlife alike."
Geese are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and any intentional harm caused to the animals could constitute a violation of both state and federal law, authorities said.
