Investigation launched after police shoot man who hit deputy with car in Brewster

PUTNAM COUNTY, New York (WABC) -- State police are investigating after an officer shot a suspect who struck them with a vehicle in Putnam County.

It happened just after 8:30 p.m. Monday on Sodom Road in the town of Southeast in the parking lot of the Henry Van Motel.

Putnam County Sheriff's Office members were investigating when the suspect's red SUV attempted to flee the scene and hit a deputy.

That's when the deputy opened fire, hitting the suspect.

"We ended up hearing two shots, two, three or four shots I believe, or something like that," said an occupant at the motel.

He was in his room when he heard the gunfire that left the suspect injured.

Surveillance video shows the car turn into a parking lot about a quarter mile away, closely followed by a police car.

Moments later, Sodom Road is flooded with responding emergency vehicles.

Both the driver of the SUV and deputy were taken to the hospital. The suspect suffered a serious injury, the deputy was treated and later released.

The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Brewster is actively investigating.
