Victim of viral racist rant in CT supermarket speaks out

STAMFORD, CT (WABC) -- A woman in the checkout line at a supermarket in Stamford, Connecticut, was seen unleashing a racist rant on another shopper.

The target of the tirade told Eyewitness News she was even more shocked to discover the woman is reportedly a nurse.

The racist rant happened inside the supermarket as Sarina Gupta says she was making some returns.

"The returns were taking a little longer than usual and that is when the customer began to get a little impatient I suggested she use one of the other registers," Gupta said. "That is when she completely unprovoked lashed out at me and told me to go back to my country."

Gupta pulled out her phone and caught the entire rant that went on for about five minutes.

"Stay out of America. Go eat your bacon," was heard on the video.

"I was just shocked I never heard someone say that outloud and in public and what kind of world do we live in that people feel empowered to say something like that?" Gupta said.

Gupta posted the clip to TikTok, where it has been viewed nearly 39,000 times.

"This is not ok it's never ok and if it happens you should feel empowered to speak up about it," Gupta said.

Sleuth-like followers figured out where the woman works and that she's a nurse.

Her employer, Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Home, which is owned by the town of Stamford, issued a statement saying in part, "It is deeply troubled by the comments made in the video. and they are investigating."

"The thought of somebody like her working with such a vulnerable population many of color is such a scary thought for me," Gupta said.

This incident happened to fall on Gupta's birthday, and while it ruined the day, the response on social media boosted her spirits.
