Water gushed into roadway from water main break in East Village

EAST VILLAGE (WABC) -- Water gushed from a broken water main in the East Village on Monday afternoon.

Some residents and businesses are without water around First Avenue at East 14th Street.

The city quickly turned off the tap and started pumping the water out.

While they stopped water from surging out of the broken pipe, they also stopped water service to the east side of 1st Ave between 13th and 14th streets.

Haley Casperson has a very dry apartment tonight

"I'm lucky enough my work has showers. I'll go there early tomorrow. Inconvenient but lucky to have that," Haley Casperson said.

Multiple restaurants were also forced to close.

The corner pizza shop was still able to sling slices on paper plates but their sink was definitely filling up with dough dishes.

"I have a lot of plates over there. Yeah, it's crazy. I don't know how. What I have come back the water, but I never see it like I see right now," manager David Jackson said.

Surprisingly, the subway kept running.

"These are 300 years old. The pipes, they have to be replaced. You have no other way to do it. So either you do preventive maintenance and do or you wait until the pipe breaks and then you dig up the sidewalk," resident Peles Israel said.

A mobile water fountain has been set up on the corner.

It's still too early to say what caused the main to burst or when service will resume.
