Sixth grade student chokes to death in Yonkers school

YONKERS, Westchester County (WABC) -- A Yonkers community is both shocked and grieving after a 12-year-old boy choked to death in school.

The medical emergency happened just before 12 p.m. at Justice Sonia Sotomayor Community School.

The Yonkers Public Schools superintendent said the sixth grader started choking and became unresponsive.

Efforts to resuscitate him were not successful and the child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

As police investigate this tragic incident, the community is rallying around the boy's classmates and teachers who are struggling immensely.
