Woman charged for making up sex assault

July 9, 2008 8:01:39 AM PDT
Eyewitness News has learned the woman who said she was sexually assaulted on Monday in a wooded area in Peekskill, has been arrested after police say her story began to show inconsistencies. Cynthia Ruiz is charged with falsely reporting an incedent, and making a punishable false written statement. She had said she was grabbed by a masked man and dragged into a wooded area where she was sexually assaulted.

Police now believe the incident never occurred and that Ruiz made up the claim in an effort to account for her whereabouts after a planned meeting with a friend in the same area.

Ruiz is being held pending her arraignment later this afternoon in Peekskill City Court.
