Authorities said bank officials were not aware of the crime until the stealth thieves began cashing in on the stolen data.
A "skimming" device attached to one of the bank's ATMs at 3150 Amboy Road on Staten Island captured information as customers swiped their cards through the machine, said Michael Armstrong, a spokesman for Sovereign Bank, the parent company of SI Bank & Trust.
Fifty customers lost a combined 53-thousand dollars, officials said.
