Son held after shovel attack

NEW YORK The father was listed in critical condition with multiple head fractures at Richmond University Hospital.

The son was held without bail, leaving neighbors begging the question how could a son turn on his father in such a brutal way?

"It's been simmering for a long time. The kid is, I hate to say it, bad news," said one neighbor.

Eighteen-year old James Deleo, Junior was arrested and charged with brutally attacking his own father, including hitting him with a shovel.

Edward McCallion, who also lives in the rented home with 45-year old James Deleo, Sr., would not talk about the brutal confrontation that he witnessed between Deleo and his son.

Investigators said the teenager was confronted by his father about staying out late.

Suddenly, Deleo, Jr. began what investigators describe as a brutal assault. They say he first threatened his father with a knife and then repeatedly punched him.

Investigators revealed in court documents that the teen then grabbed a shovel and "...did repeatedly strike Deleo, Sr. in the face causing a coma, multiple skull fractures, deep lacerations and bleeding."

Neighbors along this short two block street of neatly kept homes say the teenager caused trouble here before and argued loudly with his father.

DeLeo's attorney has requested psychological testing before his next court appearance on June 15.

The Staten Island district attorney says DeLeo is charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and fourth-degree weapon possession.
