Sandwich shop owner surrenders to face fraud charges

NEW YORK

Spiro Baltas, the CEO of Starwich Salads and Sandwiches, surrendered to postal inspectors.

He is expected to plead guilty to wire fraud charges in federal court in Lower Manhattan.

Baltas, whose real last name is Baltatzidis, opened a string of upscale sandwich shops names Starwich starting in 2004. The chain attempted to revolutionize the salad and sandwich business with upscale, high-quality ingredients.

Federal prosecutors claim he embarked in an elaborate wire fraud less than two years later.
