Crunch class uses Rad rollers as weights and to target tightness
Lauren Glassberg has the story.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A new class is using a uniquely-designed rolling apparatus to help whip you into shape.

The Rad Roller is made up of two rubberized and connected balls that are used to relieve muscle tension, and at the Motus Class at Crunch Fitness, it is used in two ways -- to massage the body and to provide some weight.

Joyce Wong leads the class through a warm up and then some strength training that has pilates and yoga elements, and then the Rad Rollers are used to target tightness.

"They're a little bit less than a pound, so it's not a crazy amount," she said. "But whenever we're doing lateral movements with the arms or even taking the arms up overhead, it adds just that little bit of weight that maybe we're not used to."

So while it may look easy, don't be deceived. It isn't so comfy. You roll out the glutes, the IT bands, the quads and the hips, then you flip over to work the shoulders before moving the rollers to release tension in the spine.

"You'll see how even though you're not necessarily stretching, you're getting a wider movement by using the self massage technique to release trigger points in the muscles," Wong said. "For me, it's about getting people to be aware of their body's imbalances from right to left, and then taking care of the themselves. Taking the time to take care."

It's an exercise routine that hurts so good.
