2 arrested after shootout with police in Newark; police searching for other suspects

NEWARK, N.J. (WABC) -- Two people are in custody, including the suspected gunman, after a shootout with police in Newark.

Police encountered a group of people around 11 p.m. Monday on North 11th Street; they said one person in the group fired at them. Officers returned fire and quickly took one person into custody, recovering a weapon.

A SWAT team along with state and local police swarmed the area searching through the night, and finally found the suspected gunman. Residents were forced to remain in their homes. The suspect was found barricaded under a porch and was taken into custody; another weapon was recovered.

Police also found six bullet holes in one home, one through a glass door and the rest in the frame.

Charges against the two men in custody are pending. They have been identified as Victorio Williams of Carteret, and Hassan Rich of Rahway.

No officers were struck in the gunfire.

The incident is under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
