New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith has undergone surgery to fix his broken jaw, the team announced Thursday.

Smith elected to have the surgery, which was performed in New Jersey, after getting a second medical opinion, a source told ESPN's Josina Anderson.

The procedure involved plates and screws being inserted into the jaw, meaning it won't have to be wired shut. Smith will remain in the hospital overnight.

Smith's jaw was broken Tuesday when former Jets linebacker IK Enemkpali punched the quarterback in a locker-room dispute over a $600 debt.

The Jets released Enemkpali, who was subsequently claimed by the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday.

Smith is expected to be sidelined for six to 10 weeks. Enemkpali could face discipline from the league office under the personal conduct policy.

ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini contributed to this report.
