2 men found shot and killed inside basement of Hempstead home were brothers, family says
HEMPSTEAD, Long Island (WABC) -- An investigation is underway on Long Island after two brothers were found fatally shot inside a Hempstead home on Wednesday morning, according to family members.
It happened at a home located at 16 Angevine Ave. Police say they responded to a call around 10:20 a.m., and two men were found dead in the basement of the home with fatal gunshot wounds.
Eyewitness News spoke to the sister of the two victims, who said her brothers were found dead inside a home office. She said the middle-aged brothers lived at the home with their parents, who own a home cleaning business.
She said her mother called her saying she was having trouble getting into the office, and when they were able to get in, they found both brothers dead on the floor.
"My mom called me. She said she can't get into her office, so, I said, 'I'll be right there.' So, I came, and that's what was found," she said.
The discovery has now forever changed the Hempstead family.
"They're my youngest brothers. They're good to me. They're good to my parents," she said. "One of them takes care of my parents. The other one works. So, I don't even understand what took place today. I don't understand any of it."
The victims' sister said the brothers were fathers and had families of their own, and a family friend described one brother as a peacemaker.
"This is one person that I did not believe would have ended like this. His life would have been ended by this," said family friend Marjorie Lindsay.
Right now, the distraught family has more questions than answers.
They may not know how this all happened or why the two brothers died, but they do know that they did not deserve to die, and so they can only hope if there is justice to prevail, that it prevails quickly.
Police have not said whether a weapon was recovered, or if they believe the incident was domestic, but detectives have determined there is no additional threat to the public.
The victims' sister told Eyewitness News that there were no apparent problems leading up to the horrifying discovery, and that the brothers had a close relationship.
"We never had no fussing, fighting, arguments or anything. So, as I said, they were good people. Good brothers." she said.
There were many people gathered just outside of the police tape looking on as both Hempstead police and the Nassau County Police Homicide Bureau investigated the deadly shooting.
The home is located near a senior living facility, and many who live there were outside and spoke with Eyewitness News about how upset they are that this happened so close to home.
"It's very sad, very sad. I feel sorry and I would like to know that family because I walk down the block and I look at them," one woman said.
The investigation is ongoing and authorities have not released any other information at this time -- including the identity of the two victims.
