Attorney: Embezzlement accelerated store closure

NEW CASTLE, Del. - April 6, 2010

Allan Finlaw, 47, of Carney's Point, New Jersey is accused of stealing more than $300,000 from Griscillo's Thriftway store in New Castle, Delaware.

Police say Finlaw, a 20 year employee of the store, was responsible for making bank deposits.

An audit revealed he had allegedly been keeping some of those profits since early 2009. Police say he would cover the shortage by using the following day's deposits.

The store closed in December after 20 years in business, putting 30 people out of work. An attorney for the owners said at the time the owners had already planned on closing. However, the embezzlement caused the closing to happen sooner than was planned.

Finlaw is charged with eight counts of Falsifying Business Records, a felony.
