Garbage can sparks explosion on subway's third rail
Carolina Leid has the story.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Some amazing video is proving again just how vicious the electrified third rail of the subway can be.

An MTA worker was removing a garbage can off a subway track in the Bronx when it suddenly exploded.

But, did vandals put it there intentionally?

The video begins with an MTA worker trying to remove a garbage can from the subway tracks with a piece of wood.

That move triggers an explosion that sent straphangers running.

It happened on 6 Line at the Cypress Avenue Station in the Bronx Sunday.

There's no word yet on who's responsible.

The worker seen in the video did not want to speak on camera, but said over the phone that he was not hurt.

Last week, a teen was arrested for placing a metal object on the tracks of a "C" train as it pulled into the Nostrand Avenue Station.

That small explosion suspended service for about an hour.

And in February, there was another similar stunt that was also posted on line, but that one backfired.

Police are looking for the teenagers who filmed themselves at the control of a moving MTA subway train.

The Facebook post shows the boys hitting buttons and honking the horn.

In a statement, the MTA said the public was in no danger because the train can't be controlled from this compartment.

Riders say each case shows a disregard for the consequences of these actions.
