BELLPORT, NY (WABC) -- Investigators are turning to the public for help as they try to find out who is responsible for leaving a dog to die in a frigid Long Island park.
The Suffolk County SPCA says the young female lab mix was discovered Tuesday in a wooded area in Bellport.
SPCA Chief Roy Gross said that the dog was emaciated and had only died a short time before it was found.
The dog was inside the cage near the Martha Avenue Park.
Gross said that it is too early in the investigation to determine a cause of death, but a necropsy is being performed.
Anyone with information should contact the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722. All calls will be kept confidential.
