CONEY ISLAND (WABC) -- A 10-year-old girl is dead after falling into the waters off Coney Island.
Witnesses say the girl was playing on a rock jetty with her 9-year-old sister in the ocean near Stillwell Avenue when both girls slipped and fell into the water.
Good Samaritans pulled both girls out of the water. The 9-year-old was not injured.
They tried to perform CPR on 10-year-old Takara McDuffy of Staten Island.
EMT's took over when they arrived and rushed her to Coney Island Hospital where she died.
This happened just before 7 p.m. There were no lifeguards on duty at the time. During beach season, lifeguards are on duty daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty and in closed sections.
