NYC removes application fee for CUNY schools for low-income students

NEW YORK (WABC) -- New York City is removing one of the financial barriers for low-income students who want to apply for college.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and schools chancellor Carmen Fariña announced the elimination of the CUNY application fee in Brooklyn Monday at FDR High School.

It's estimated more than $37,000 high school seniors will qualify for the $65 application fee waiver.

"We want to see a lot more kids make it. We want to see more kids have the experience of succeeding at getting into college and then in college. And that is why we are so focused on making sure that the application fee is not an impediment," Mayor de Blasio said.

The fee waiver is part of the "College Access for All" program one of Mayor de Blasio's initiatives.
