Suspect arraigned in slashing of woman on platform at Grand Central Terminal

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- The suspect in the slashing of a woman at Grand Central Terminal Sunday has been arraigned and ordered held without bail.

53-year-old Jacqueline Sanjurjo was charged with two counts of assault, criminal possession of a weapon and acting in a manner injurious to a child.

Sanjurjo's last address was a Bronx women's shelter.

Sanjurjo has more than 60 prior arrests, for drugs, prostitution and trespassing, authorities say. She has a history of drug use.

The 30-year old-victim, Anna Martinez, received more than 30 stitches to her face. She was treated at Bellevue Hospital.

Martinez got on the subway at 125th Street Sunday with her 18-month-old son. The suspect followed her through the gate.

Once on the southbound number 5 subway train, Martinez sat down and the suspect sat across from her.

As the train approached Grand Central, the doors opened.

According to police, the suspect got up from her seat, approached the victim and without saying a word, swung at her face.

The victim caught her hand, and the suspect grabbed her hair, investigators said.

The suspect then fled the train and ran through Grand Central. When the victim left the train, she realized she had an injury.

During an ensuing canvas, the suspect was observed at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue, outside the Port Authority bus terminal.

She was wearing the same distinctive red shirt reported by witnesses on the train and was taken into custody by the NYPD.

Police say she admitted "that she got rid of the sharp object that was used in the assault."
