NJ Burkett has more from Holbrook.

HOLBROOK, Long Island (WABC) -- A gas station in Long Island may have accidentally sold diesel fuel to customers who bought regular.

A third-party transport delivery company working for the Speedway on Union Avenue in Holbrook apparently dropped diesel fuel into the regular unleaded tank and regular unleaded into the diesel tank on Wednesday, a company spokesperson said. Premium fuel purchases were not affected

Apparently nobody realized the mix-up until cars started stalling out.

"I come in, and we have five cars here, they were kind of the same condition, that misfire condition. So one car, we pulled the gas. And that's when we found it was actually diesel. The last thing you think is that there's diesel in the fuel tank," said Anthony Posa from the nearby MTA Auto Service.

The auto shop urged drivers who may have accidentally purchased diesel to see a mechanic ASAP.

"Try and get a fuel sample done, and you can actually look and see the difference in the color of fuel, and you will be able to determine that," said Rick Sayres from MTA Auto.

Repairs can cost $400 to $600. The company is covering the cost of repairs, but mechanics say the potential long-term damage to any of these cars is impossible to predict.

Anyone who may have been impacted should contact Speedway's Customer Service department at 800-643-1948.
