WESTHAMPTON, N.Y. (WABC) -- A dead whale washed up on Westhampton Beach.
The 32-foot male Humpback was found Tuesday afternoon in front of 509 Dune Road. It had first been spotted on Monday floating 18 miles off the Southampton shore.
The Riverhead Foundation is working with village officials to figure out a way to move the whale above high tide so a necropsy can be done.
In its current position, the whale gets surrounded by water during high tide, so it has to be moved first.
There are no signs of trauma, so the cause of death won't be known until a necropsy can be completed.
The whale was determined to be sub-adult because adult whales are around 50 feet long.
Once a necropsy is done, the whale will be buried on the beach.
