Family mourns man killed trying to break up bar fight in Jersey City

JERSEY CITY (WABC) -- A family is in mourning and speaking out about their brother, who died days after trying to break up a fight in a bar in New Jersey.

Benie Kaulesar was just trying to keep the peace when a fight broke out last week in a bar in Jersey City.

He was punched from behind, fell and hit his head, and died.

The family wants to know the facts behind the altercation, but in the meantime they are celebrating what he gave in life, and death.

"Benie would give his life for his friends, he would take his shirt off his back and give it to them," said his brother Johnny.

There were 16 brothers and sisters of all. Benie was the youngest of the boys.

After he was declared brain-dead, they made the tough decision to end life support.

"That's my last brother, my baby brother, I get very emotional," said Benie's brother Deodat.

Police say on August 16, two men got into an argument outside Palm Court Restaurant and Sports Bar at Kearney and West Side Avenues.

Kaulesar, who was 57, tried to get them to stop, but he was punched and hit the ground. He never recovered.

"This incident really was about a friend, and he was trying to help and this was the consequences of it," said one of Benie's brothers, Ishri Bach Kaulesar.

Police have charged 38-year old Cornelius Ramadhar with aggravated assault, which may be upgraded since Benie Kaulesar has died.

Investigators are reviewing security video from outside the bar.

Kaulesar leaves his siblings and his son. As they make funeral arrangements, they find smiles in the memory of the boy who came to America from Guyana at 18 years old, the second brother to come, with more family right behind him.

"He'll do anything for people. He'll forget himself and do things for people. That's the person he was," said Deodat.

His family says he was an organ donor and because of that, 4 patients have a chance at better lives.
