NEW YORK (WABC) -- The blizzard of 2026 impacted millions across New York City and the Tri-State area on February 22-23, 2026.

The major storm that blanketed the region with snow, canceled flights, disrupted transit and downed power lines.

More than 30 inches of snow fell on parts of Long Island and New Jersey.

Thousands of New Yorkers ask Mamdani in petition to switch to remote learning on Tuesday

More than 70,000 New Yorkers have signed an online petition asking New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to switch to remote learning on Tuesday after a blizzard dumped as much as two feet of snow in part of the city on Monday.

NJ Transit and NJ Turnpike Authority announce status updates

New Jersey Transit and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority announced a number of status updates on Monday afternoon.

NJ Transit Newark Light Rail and River LINE resumed service in the 4 p.m. hour, operating on Sunday schedules.

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) will begin to resume service in the 6 p.m. hour, operating on a weekend schedule.

All rail, bus and Access Link services remain suspended until conditions allow for safe resumption. Crews continue clearing train station platforms, parking lots and other rail infrastructure. Bus and Access Link personnel continue with snow removal at garages and facilities, while continuing to monitor roadway conditions to determine a safe resumption time.

New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials announced the Commercial Vehicle Travel Restriction will be lifted effective at 5 p.m. Monday,for all highways.

In addition, the Emergency Traffic Regulation Order that temporarily lowered all posted speed limits to 35 miles per hour will be lifted at the same time.

NYC Parks truck falls through Manhattan sidewalk

A New York City Parks Department truck fell through a sidewalk grate at the edge of City Hall Park in lower Manhattan amid Monday's blizzard.

Nobody was injured, officials said.

Crews are working to tow the truck and then block the area off.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Catholic elementary schools in Manhattan, Bronx open Tuesday; Staten Island schools closed

The Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of New York announced that Catholic parish and regional elementary schools in Manhattan and the Bronx will be open on Tuesday, while Catholic parish and regional elementary schools on Staten Island will be closed due to ongoing snowstorm cleanup and safety concerns.

The superintendent says schools outside of New York City will continue to follow their local public school districts' guidance on closures or delayed openings.

Catholic elementary schools in Brooklyn and Queens, which fall under the Diocese of Brooklyn, will follow diocesan guidance.
