NEWARK (WABC) -- The search continues for a prisoner who escaped from a guarded hospital room in Newark.

Authorities say 46-year-old Elijan Shabazz, who was under police guard by two officers, was able to get out of University Hospital in Newark. He was admitted for inpatient treatment after complaining of chest pains last Friday.

But when doctors and officers went into his room around 11 a.m. Monday, Shabazz was gone.

The hospital was put in lockdown for more than two hours and only patients entering the building for treatment were allowed in.

A search is being conducted by the Newark police and Rutgers police departments, as well as hospital personnel.

Shabazz was in prison for robbery, burglary and resisting arrest. Once recaptured, he will face additional charges.

The lockdown has since been lifted, but the suspect has not been found.
