JERSEY CITY (WABC) -- A pier caught under the Pulaski Skyway in Jersey City Friday afternoon.

Construction workers were cutting steel and sparks fell, setting dead grass or debris on fire.

A fire boat was called to help put out the flames. Workers also dropped water from the top of the bridge.

Westbound lanes will be open for afternoon commute. Eastbound lanes are closed for the ongoing bridge reconstruction project.

The state DOT is sending its bridge evaluation group to inspect the inspect the support structure.

The fire burned through the wood that surrounds the concrete pier, (which is the bridge's support) to protect the concrete.

The Pulaski Skyway is undergoing a multiyear construction project. Two Manhattan-bound lanes were closed for two years starting back in April.
