Woman arrested in stabbing of tourist in Macy's Herald Square

MIDTOWN (WABC) -- Police arrested a woman for allegedly stabbing a tourist inside the Macy's in Herald Square on Thursday afternoon.

Kerri Aherne, 43, of Massachusetts, was charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, the NYPD said.

A 38-year-old woman from California was stabbed multiple times inside of the Macy's just before 3 p.m. in the back and arm. She was at the store shopping with her husband.

The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.

A Macy's spokesperson released a statement saying, "We are deeply saddened about the incident that took place today as the safety of our customers and colleagues is our top priority. We kindly defer any further questions to the local authorities."

Police say the attack appeared to be unprovoked.
