Andrew McCarthy's new book focuses on male friendships

NEW YORK CITY, New York (WABC) -- Andrew McCarthy may be best known from movies like "Pretty in Pink" and "St. Elmo's Fire," but he is also a bestselling author with a new book out.

"Who Needs Friends" is all about male friendships--something McCarthy said he started thinking a lot about after a seemingly innocent comment from his son.

"He kind of looked up at me and said, 'Yeah, you don't really have any friends, do you, dad?' I sat with that for a couple of days, it kept coming back to me so I just got in the car, meandered all over reconnecting with my friends," McCarthy said.

Along the way he said he started talking with other men he would just randomly approach in gas stations or in cafes.

"I'd say 'Hey can you talk to me about your friends' and invariably they all kind of looked at me like I was nuts and then interestingly not a single man said no," McCarthy said. "By the end of those conversations they'd always had said, 'You know I never talked about this before?'"

In all, McCarthy traveled 10,000 miles across 22 states and those stories helped him write, "Who Needs Friends."
