Suffolk County police rescue teen stuck in mud

SHIRLEY, New York (WABC) -- A 15-year-old boy was rescued after becoming stuck in mud while lost in a wooded area of Suffolk County Sunday night, according to police.

Officers responded to a 911 call at around 7:27 p.m. from Benjamin Moore, who said he had gone for a walk inside Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley and could not find his way back after dark.

Police said Moore accidentally stepped into an offshoot of the Carmans River, where he sank into the mud and became stuck.

Body camera video shows officers working to locate the teen as he remained on the phone with a 911 dispatcher. He was instructed to use the flashlight on his cellphone to signal for help.

Suffolk County Police Aviation Section officers searched from above while Moore waved his phone's light to guide them. Once he was spotted, aviation crews directed officers on the ground to his location.

Patrol officers and Emergency Service Section members were able to reach Moore and pull him out of the muddy water at around 8:25 p.m., about an hour after he called.

Additional support from the Canine Section, Marine Bureau, and local fire departments assisted in the response.

Moore was escorted out of the woods and transported by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital for evaluation.
