Boy, 13, killed in Flushing moped crash after swerving to avoid car door

FLUSHING, Queens (WABC) -- A 13-year-old was killed, and another was injured Monday afternoon when a moped they were riding crashed into a truck in Flushing, Queens.

Police say it happened at 12:38 p.m. between 45th and 46th avenues and 162nd Street.

The initial investigation shows that two 13-year-old boys were riding southbound on 162nd Street when they swerved to avoid a driver-side door that opened in their path.

Police say the moped lost control and collided with a truck that was also traveling southbound on 162nd Street.

According to an NYPD release, "The passenger fell off the moped and came in contact with the rear wheel of the truck."

The passenger was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The moped driver is expected to recover from injuries.

Police say all parties remained at the scene and no arrests were made.
