Bronx Zoo caring for stowaway fox found aboard ship from England

BRONX (WABC) -- The Wildlife Conservation Society's Bronx Zoo is caring for a sly fox that stowed away on a ship to the Port of New York and New Jersey from England.

The animal was found among the ship's cargo and safely secured by United States Customs and Border Protection.

The 2-year-old male red fox weights about 11 pounds.

He was brought to the Bronx Zoo on Feb. 19 where wildlife officials have set up a new home for him.

Initial exams indicate that he appears to be in good condition, but veterinarians are waiting for results from additional routine screenings.

"First and foremost we're just focused on the animal's health," said Keith Lovett, VP and director of animal programs.. "All things considered, it's doing pretty well, it's nice and strong, it doesn't seem terribly afraid of people, it's not that skittish, so the animal is doing well."

Once the fox gets a clean bill of health, the zoo will work with wildlife experts to find him a long-term home.

The Bronx Zoo regularly works with officials to help rescue wildlife that is illegally trafficked through nearby ports and airports, however, they say it is rare to rescue a stowaway.

Officials with the zoo say red foxes are very adaptable and thrive in various environments.
