Carnegie Deli reopens in Midtown after 10-year hiatus
MIDTOWN (WABC) -- Carnegie Deli, one of New York City's most recognizable restaurants, reopened Tuesday nearly a decade after closing its doors.
The deli originally closed in 2016, a move that many customers viewed as the end of an era. On Tuesday, the restaurant returned in a new space just steps from its original location, with staff preparing for opening day and balloons visible inside the restaurant ahead of the launch.
Carnegie Deli first opened in 1937. In 1976, Milton Parker and his partners took over the business, helping establish its reputation over the following decades. The deli became known as the "Corned Beef and Pastrami Maven."
Sarri Harper, the company's current CEO and third-generation owner, said her mother announced the deli's closure in 2016 to focus on other business ventures.
Now, nearly 10 years later, the restaurant has reopened at the former Stage Deli location at 834 Seventh Ave.
The return drew interest from customers across the region. Among those waiting for the opening was the first person in line, who traveled from Boston to attend the reopening.
Much of the menu will be available throughout the day, according to the restaurant. Seating is walk-in only.
The deli opened its doors at 11 a.m. Tuesday, marking the beginning of its next chapter in Midtown Manhattan.
