5-alarm fire burns through Queens warehouse

COLLEGE POINT, Queens (WABC) -- Authorities are investigating the cause of a five-alarm fire at a warehouse in Queens on Friday night.

The five-alarm fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. at a warehouse on 130th Street between 20th and 22nd avenues in College Point.

A lumberyard inside the two-story building fueled flames that took all night for firefighters to bring under control. They were still dousing hotspots on Saturday morning.

Some of the smoke from the fire could be seen from miles away, blowing north up into Westchester County at one point. The smoke prompted the Mount Vernon Police Department to put out a notice about the smell of fire.

According to the FDNY, firefighters arrived on scene within minutes and were met with an odor of smoke. Crews on scene searched the two-story building, which spans over 64,000 square feet and is subdivided. Once they determined no one was inside, firefighters pulled out and began an exterior attack.

FDNY Assistant Chief Mike Meyers described the emergency response during a press conference.

"At one point, we had eight tower ladders in operation completely surrounding the structure. Like we said, it was a lumber yard inside of a building, so it was incredibly large volume of fuel feeding that fire," Meyers said.

"For us, we were incredibly competent in the fact nobody on the fire side got hurt, nobody on the EMS side and no civilians hurt."

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. As of 8 a.m. on Sunday, the FDNY says the fire is under control.

Nearly 300 fire and EMS personnel responded to help battle the flames.
