EAST HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) -- Disney kicked off its annual Magic of Storytelling campaign.
Eyewitness News anchor Shirleen Allicott read to children at P.S. 171 in East Harlem on Monday.
Disney, in collaboration with the non-profit organization, First Book, hopes to inspire a life-long love of reading and to help provide books to educators in underserved communities.
"Exposing them to literature, may it be through conversation, through reading -- reading the same book over and over again, because many of them, they learn through repetition, and that routine, that practice of routine is really helpful for them to learn how to engage that phonological awareness, and so through that, it helps them learn how to be long-time learners, and ultimately, potentially be voracious readers," said NYC Schools Deputy Chancellor of the Division of Early Childhood Education Simone C. Hawkins.
The school where Shirleen read to students will receive a donation of books from First Book.

Since 2000, Disney Publishing Worldwide has donated more than 90 million books to First Book.
Disney is the parent company of WABC-TV.
