NYC to announce new 9/11 education initiative ahead of 25th anniversary
NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- New York City officials are set to announce a major investment in 9/11 education programs for public school students Thursday as the nation prepares to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks next week.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, City Council Speaker Julie Menin and other officials are expected to unveil the initiative at the Oculus at the World Trade Center in partnership with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. The announcement will be followed by a wreath-laying ceremony honoring the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks.
The funding is intended to help future generations understand the significance of 9/11 and its lasting impact on New York City and the nation.
The announcement follows a solemn ceremony Wednesday honoring firefighters who died from illnesses linked to their work at Ground Zero. Families laid flowers beneath the FDNY Memorial Wall at FDNY headquarters in Brooklyn, where the names of 36 recently deceased members were added. More than 600 FDNY members have died from 9/11-related illnesses since the attacks.
"Let us renew our devotion to those who are sick and our commitment to the families of those who have passed away," Mamdani said during the ceremony. "And let us renew our responsibility to ensuring the sacrifice made for these 36 heroes is repaid with the same service and solidarity that defined each and every one of their lives."
Commemorations next week at the National September 11 Memorial are expected to draw former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Joe Biden. President Donald Trump is not expected to attend the ceremony but is scheduled to host a separate Sept. 8 event featuring a recovered steel beam from the World Trade Center site, with firefighters from New York and Washington expected to participate.
