East Harlem high-rise apartment building fire leaves 72-year-old dead, firefighter injured

EAST HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) -- One person was killed, and a firefighter was injured after a fire broke out at a high-rise apartment building in Harlem on Wednesday.

Officials received reports of a fire on the 19th floor of the 35-story apartment building located at 221 E. 122nd St. between Third and Second avenues just before 7 p.m.

Twenty units and 78 fire and EMS personnel responded to the fire.

Officials say an unidentified 72-year-old individual was killed, and one firefighter suffered minor injuries.

The fire was placed under control just after 8 p.m.

Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of the deadly fire.
