Elijah Wood talks gory, 'absurd' new movie, 'The Toxic Avenger'

Troma has remade a cult classic and it is just as outrageous as you'd expect!

"The Toxic Avenger" stars Peter Dinklage as Winston, a down-on-his-luck guy who, after falling into toxic waste, transforms into a mutant vigilante. Jacob Tremblay plays Winston's stepson Wade. Kevin Bacon plays Bob Garbinger, the evil boss at the crooked corporation where Dinklage works. Elijah Wood plays Fritz Garbinger, Bob's brother and sort-of henchman.

"The movie is about this guy who's an unlikely hero who becomes one and fights against the evil forces in this town that are conspiring to sort of take over and harm people," Wood told On The Red Carpet. "The movie takes place in a slightly heightened reality with over-the-top violence and kind of absurd wild characters, very much paying homage to the Troma films that inspired it, telling a new story within the context of that universe," Wood explained.

"I get to play a villain that has a sort of hunchback and stringy hair and is virtually unrecognizable to me, which was really fun," Wood continued. "He is his sort of brother's henchman and kind of an evil character, but ultimately at its core, I think he just wants to be loved, which we sort of find out. But such a fun character to play. I remember being given the script from Macon (Blair) who's a dear friend. Macon wrote and directed the film and he sent me the script with a drawing, and kind of a rendering of what Fritz would look like, which was just thrilling, you know, to play a character that allowed for such a fun transformation and to wear wigs. It was really fun."

Troma Entertainment, an independent film company known for its lower budget horror films, released the original version of "The Toxic Avenger" in 1984. Wood said their remake is gooey and gory and he hopes fans enjoy every moment.

"There's a lot of really fun detail in it for Troma fans, very much paying homage to the Troma films that inspired it, telling a new story within the context of that universe. It's hilarious. It's hyper violent, really fun, it was great."

"The Toxic Avenger" is in theaters now.
