Aggressive coyote attacks multiple dogs in Connecticut
FAIRFIELD, Connecticut (WABC) -- Residents in a Fairfield neighborhood are being urged to use caution after police warned about an aggressive coyote that attacked multiple dogs and showed unusual behavior around people.
According to Fairfield police, the coyote was spotted in the area of Mill Hill Road, Bronson Road and Whites Hill Lane after attacking multiple dogs on Friday.
Authorities said the animal has been seen approaching dogs of various sizes, including larger breeds, and has also approached people in residential areas and nearby open-space trails.
"The coyote has been seen just up the street, and all around, actually. So it's a little frightening because my dog is little," Fairfield resident Linda Keating said.
Keating lives in the neighborhood with her dog, Ginger.
Small dogs are considered potential prey for coyotes, but police said the animal involved in the recent encounters has exhibited unusual behavior by approaching dogs of different sizes and showing little fear of people.
Authorities also said the coyote has remained in the area following some of the encounters.
"This is the first time I've heard about of an aggressive one, because we do have a lot of them. And, you know, they walk down the street when they feel like it. So they're not always in the woods," Keating said.
Police advised residents to be cautious when walking their dogs and to keep pets indoors whenever possible, even at homes with fenced yards.
Some residents said they have taken additional precautions to protect their animals.
"I've put in a fence around my property and I, and then put wire inside the fence to keep everything out so that, my animals can go out and I don't have to worry about anything getting in," a resident said.
Officials continue to warn residents in the area to remain vigilant and take precautions when outdoors with pets.
