Bergen County sheriff's officers perform CPR, save unresponsive driver in Hackensack
HACKENSACK, New Jersey (WABC) -- An 80-year-old driver is recovering after Bergen County sheriff's officers responded to a medical emergency Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Essex Street and Polifly Road in Hackensack, New Jersey.
Authorities were alerted to a vehicle stopped in the roadway. When members of the Bergen County Sheriff's Office arrived, they found the driver unresponsive.
Officers broke a passenger-side window to reach him. Working together, they removed the man from the vehicle and performed CPR and used a defibrillator in an effort to restart his heart.
The incident marked the third time in Sheriff's Officer Ryan Dingertopadre's career that he has been involved in a life-saving emergency of this kind.
According to the sheriff, officers are required to train in CPR and are expected to take that training seriously in preparation for emergencies such as this one.
The driver remains in recovery.
Authorities said his outcome was aided by the officers' quick response and their training in life-saving procedures.
