Parents express concern, sadness over preschool closure in Perth Amboy

PERTH AMBOY, New Jersey (WABC) -- There's a somber feeling in the air around Harborview Early Learning Center, which will be forced to close its doors for good next week after decades in operation.

The center has been run by the YMCA in cooperation with the Perth Amboy School District. It rented space from the presbyterian church which is choosing to now end the relationship.

"We're really upset," said one parent. "We love the people there...The people are really trustworthy."

Laura Munoz-Humphreys, the president & CEO of YMCA of MEWSA told Eyewitness News that the landlord is preparing the building for "future use" and the center needed to vacate.

"It's a wonderful place and this is no reflection of the staff," she said. "They created a wonderful environment."

Parents say a meeting was called just last week. And now, the last day is Tuesday, June 30. The YMCA is scrambling to help families find another spot for their child.

"We do have three locations within the YMCA in other cities, and we can also direct them to the school district that has a network of providers in Perth Amboy," said Munoz-Humphreys.
