LINDEN, New Jersey (WABC) -- In Linden, New Jersey, the school year is kicking off with a new dress code, leading some parents to worry about potential punishments for students who don't comply.
Some students are all in when it comes to the new uniforms policy.
"I think it's normal because we have more problems with dressing up," said student Fabraizzio Teran. "So, for me it's not a big deal."
Some are not happy about it at all.
"Us growing up in an age of expression, I believe it's a good thing to have the ability to express yourself through fashion, through clothing," said Linden High School senior Jaime Paladi.
The Linden School District asked parents back in the spring, and a majority voted to bring uniforms back.
"I think it's a good idea," said a parent, Mrs. Blanco. "I'm originally from the city, and I'm a Catholic school girl. So, I always wore uniforms all my life."
But some parents say the change is hitting them financially.
"The skirt for my daughter was $21 for one skirt," said Latasha Cavezza, a parent of three. "So, in order for me to get her enough outfits to last her for one week, it's like $300 per kid."
A few of the moms Eyewitness News spoke to say they each have three students in the district. They say they are also hearing from other families who are also worried about the costs.
"Some parents are single parents, working," said Khalistan Williams, a parent of three. "Maybe they left at 6 o'clock in the morning - maybe they don't know that their kid left without their school uniform."
They are also concerned about the policy that says students not in proper uniform may be pulled out of class, face detention or suspension.
"Which I don't think is fair because then he's missing out on his instruction time, and it's not his fault he doesn't have his uniform on," Cavezza said.
Linden Schools Superintendent Dr. Atiya Perkins is hoping to reassure those parents.
"We don't want our students at home anyway, this is not what this is about when it comes to uniform or any form of code of conduct," she said.
Dr. Perkins says many in the Linden community, corporations and even families of other students and graduates are helping to make sure uniforms are available for any family needing help.
"If a family has any concerns with the cost, they need reach out to the school or contact my office," Dr. Perkins said.
