LIVINGSTON, New Jersey (WABC) -- The Livingston Police Department is taking a hardline on trespassers at the dying Livingston Mall.
Capt. Joseph D'Andrea says social media posts have encouraged people, especially juveniles, to "explore" the mall.
"The Livingston Police Department is aware of the growing social media presence surrounding the Livingston Mall property and the interest it is generating to visit the site," police posted on social media. "There will be zero tolerance for anyone visiting this property with criminal intent. Individuals found in violation will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, which could result in a permanent arrest record."
Barnes & Noble, the last remaining occupant, is transitioning out of the location soon as the township eyes several plans to redevelop the 43-acre site along Eisenhower Parkway. No timeline for the redevelopment has been set.
D'Andrea encouraged parents to talk to their teenagers about staying away from the property.
"Even though it might seem tempting. It might seem in good fun, but stay away," told Eyewitness News. "It's still private property. You're going to be charged, and that can have consequences."
