2 women from Long Island killed, another critically injured in Maine boat crash

MAINE (WABC) -- A deadly boat crash in Maine killed two women from Suffolk County and critically injured another from New York over the weekend.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in the upper reaches of Flagstaff Lake in Maine.

According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, a group of seven people were on a pontoon boat when its bow started to go under. Officials say the boat driver attempted to raise the bow, but it didn't work.

The boat eventually flipped over, throwing all seven people into the water about 180 feet from shore, officials say. Witnesses nearby on land and on the lake rushed in to help those thrown overboard get back to the shore

CPR was performed on three people who were unresponsive following the crash.

Two of the victims, 23-year-old Kiran Akbar of Lake Grove, New York, and 53-year-old Farhana Nasir of Selden, New York, were pronounced dead at the scene. First responders transported another woman, 22-year-old Noor Nasir of New York, via air ambulance to a nearby hospital in Bangor, Maine, where she is in critical condition.

Officials say no one in the boat was wearing life jackets, and that a preliminary investigation has indicated alcohol was not a factor in the incident.

Authorities are now trying to determine what led up to the crash.
