Rescuers say abandoned dog was 'left to die'

MONMOUTH COUNTY, New Jersey (WABC) -- The Monmouth County SPCA is helping to care for a neglected dog that they say was left to die on the side of a road in Marlboro.

Shelter officials said they found Firefox left in a crate and unable to walk earlier this week.

He weighed only 3 pounds when he was rescued. In a Facebook post, the shelter said the pup "was discarded like trash, unable to walk and skeletal from starvation."

He had a body condition score of one, which is the lowest possible rating before death. Firefox's blood sugar levels are four times the normal limit due to trauma.

Rescuers said he survived his first critical night in emergency care, but his road to recovery is long, as he is experiencing medical issues on top of starvation and neglect.

Monmouth County SPCA is seeking donations, as Firefox has a long road to recovery. They said they need extra support for his hospitalization, physical therapy, specialized food regimen for weight gain and ongoing medical care.

While law enforcement searches for the person responsible for abandoning Firefox, the shelter is asking if anyone knows where Firefox came from to reach out to the Marlboro Police Department or email them at info@monmouthcountyspca.org.
