NYRR celebrates Harlem Week with annual Percy Sutton Harlem 5K on Saturday
HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) -- New York Road Runners, the nonprofit that "runs" New York City, said it will host more than 5,500 athletes for Saturday's Percy Sutton Harlem 5K.
NYRR is partnering up with the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) and HARLEM WEEK to celebrate Harlem's culture and creativity in the annual Percy Sutton Harlem 5K.
The event will take place on Aug. 8 in Harlem, starting at Edgecomb Avenue at West 136th Street and wrapping up at St. Nicholas Avenue at West 138th Street.
Eyewitness News Sports Anchor Sam Ryan will join former deputy Manhattan borough president Keisha Sutton-James and will race alongside high school girls for Run for the Future's 15th anniversary.
Notable participants will be on site as well, including NYRR CEO Rob Simmelkjaer and hip hop artist and Harlem native FERG.
This event also marks a milestone for participants in the NYRR Open Run New Runner Clinic--a program designed to help runners kick-start their running journey--as many of them will embark on their first 5K race.
Schedule of events:
-8:00 a.m. - Percy Sutton Harlem 5K start
-8:15 a.m. - First 5K finisher expected
-8:35 a.m. - Rising New York Road Runners Stage 3 (ages 12 - 18) 1 mile starts
-8:55 a.m. - Rising New York Road Runners Stage 2 (ages 8 - 18) .5 mile starts
-9:20 a.m. - 1 Mile Hazel Dukes Memorial Family Health Walk starts
-9:50 a.m. - Rising New York Road Runners Stage 1 (ages 2 - 11) dashes start
