NEW YORK (WABC) -- Polls open Tuesday morning across New York as voters head to the ballot box in several closely watched congressional primary races that could reshape the state's representation in Washington.
Several contests feature open seats, high-profile endorsements and millions of dollars in campaign spending, making this one of the most consequential primary days in recent years.
In New York's 7th Congressional District, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso is expected to cast his vote at a polling site in Williamsburg as he seeks to emerge as the frontrunner in a race to succeed outgoing Representative Nydia Velázquez.
Reynoso's main challenger is Claire Valdez, a democratic socialist and union organizer who has received the endorsement of Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Velázquez, who chose not to seek reelection, has endorsed Reynoso.
Another high-stakes battle is unfolding in New York's 10th Congressional District, where Brad Lander is challenging incumbent Representative Dan Goldman. Lander has secured Mamdani's endorsement, while Goldman has the backing of several prominent Democrats, including Governor Kathy Hochul.
Voters are also closely watching the race for New York's 12th Congressional District following Representative Jerry Nadler's decision to step aside.
Micah Lasher enters the race as a leading contender but faces a crowded field that includes Alex Bores. The contest has become one of the most expensive congressional primaries in the country, with former Mayor Michael Bloomberg spending millions of dollars in support of the race. Unlike several other contests on the ballot, Mamdani has not endorsed a candidate in the 12th District race.
Meanwhile, in New York's 13th Congressional District, which includes Harlem, Washington Heights and parts of the Bronx, Representative Adriano Espaillat is seeking another term in Congress.
Espaillat faces a challenge from democratic socialist candidate Daralisa Avila Chevalier, who has also received Mamdani's endorsement.
Political observers will be watching closely to see whether the mayor's support for candidates in several races translates into voter turnout and electoral victories.
Polls are open from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. across New York. Watch parties are expected throughout the city Tuesday night, and Mamdani has said he plans to attend events for all three of the candidates he endorsed.
